Were This Year's Cavs Fool's Gold?

<照片>

LeBron James walked off the floor and out of Amway Arena in Orlando on Saturday night without talking to the media and shaking hands with the Orlando Magic following the Cavs' 103-90 loss in Game 6.

Amway Arena

One of my best friends from back in Ohio (who is not a Cavs fan, by the way) sent me a series of texts last month after the Cavs wrapped up homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs:

"Sooner or later, the Cavs organization will be exposed for having convinced people and themselves that they actually built a well-constructed team around LeBron. Ferry f***ed up big time with the Larry Hughes signing, and why the hell did he give Gibson close to the [midlevel exception] for four or five years? This team will be exposed sooner or later. I don't know how the hell you all won 66 games, but you are not even close to being the best team in the league. Your team is a sham. And [your guys'] frontcourt is old and decrepit and if you still think that [Anderson Varejao] deserves $7-8 million a year [then] you should stop watching basketball."

I laughed at the time. I'll never forget it. I texted him back and told him he knew nothing about hoops and was just jealous because his Knicks had no shot in hell at LeBron.

Oh yeah, and I threatened to curbstomp him. Just kidding.

Now, a little over a month later, a dream season where a number of franchise records fell and a Finals appearance seemed like a lock came crashing down in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals in, of all places, Orlando. Not
Boston. Not Game 6 of the NBA Finals at Los Angeles. Orlando. Home of the Magic, the team that nobody even bothered to acknowledge as an elite team as recently as February.

And it happened amidst a very familiar scene: LeBron James trying to lead the team despite getting absolutely no help around him. Wasn't this supposed to be the year when he had help around him?

Wally Szczerbiak had a look at a wide-open 3 at the top of the arc in the first half. High school players could have at least hit the rim. You or I could have at least grazed the rim, prompting taunts of "brick" from anyone watching.

But here's a guy getting paid $13 million. He's one of the three highest-paid players on this 66-win team. What does he do? He airballs it. From the top of the arc. Point blank. Wide open. Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Airball. $13 million. Wally Szczerbiak.

He airballed a midrange jumper again in the fourth quarter.

Mo Williams showed just why it took two injuries for him to be a replacement on the East's All-Star team. Oh yeah, Mo put up an airball in the second half, too. All-Star point guard. Mo Williams. Airball. Eastern Conference Finals. Game 6. Mo Williams. All-Star.
Mo
Mo Willaims!!!

I pointed this out earlier in the season following the Cavs' 29-point loss at
Orlando in April: This team's problem is that they are so far and away head and shoulders above 27 of the 29 other teams in the league. The disparity between them and those 27 teams makes them seem like worldbeaters.

But to be a champion, you have to be better than anybody. And it's those two teams -- Orlando and
Los Angeles (and maybe, maybe, even Boston with a healthy Kevin Garnett) -- that will keep the Cavs from being a champion.

Let's not even forget that the Magic were without Jameer Nelson, a real All-Star who was selected by the coaches over Williams. Rafer Alston played well in Nelson's absence, but if Jameer's playing, we're talking about a sweep. No question. And dude's only 27. And he'll definitely be back next year.

The question is, who will be back for the Cavs next year? Who shouldn't be? And what needs to be done to make sure that the Cavs close the deal in June of 2010, a month before, oh, I don't know, some guy enters unrestricted free agency?

Before we enter the roster evaluation, let me get this one thing across: LeBron James should not, under any circumstances, sign that contract extension this summer. This is a guy who has far more leverage with his franchise than any other player in professional sports right now. Think of one guy who has as much leverage and pull with his professional team in sports today.

Nobody. Why should LeBron throw that away? And after the way the organizaton tried to convince him and fans that they finally have put together a good team around him? After the front office decided that team chemistry meant more than talent during the trade deadline?

If LeBron inks that extension this summer, it may put the front office and Danny Ferry on easy street. They may not be as aggressive in this critical offseason.

Plus, LeBron can sign for an even bigger six-year deal in 2010. He gets to expand his brand and become the feature story of the summer. Even during the offseason in the midst of baseball and NFL training camps, LeBron would lead Sportscenter every night. His would be the first name off of every sports fans' tongue that summer.

Even if he decides to re-sign with the Cavs, why not make the world revolve around you? Average people like me and you are lying if we say that we wouldn't enjoy making everyone around us say "How high?" when we say "Jump!" LeBron will have that chance in 2010.

Also, congratulations are in order for the Orlando Magic. There is no doubt that they were the better team in this series. They got it done when they needed to, they protected their home court, and they are the better all-around team.

And hats off to the real Executive of the Year, Otis Smith. Sure,
Denver's Mark Warkentien won the award this year on paper, but it's Smith who is the most brilliant front office mind in the game today. He cleared cap room in '07 and signed Rashard Lewis, who has emerged as a legitimate All-Star and borderline superstar. Smith then signed Mickael Pietrus in unrestricted free ageny last summer as his key guy off the bench and drafted an NBA-ready rookie in Courtney Lee out of Western Kentucky. He then traded for Rafer Alston at the trade deadline after Jameer Nelson was lost with his season-ending injury.
另外他也在Nelson受傷後補進了Alston(這段有夠馬後砲的!!!)

Smith was also
Orlando's Director of Player Development for two years before he became the GM in 2005, and he helped find Dwight Howard his sidekick right off the bat by drafting Nelson in the same draft. That same summer, he helped sign Hedo Turkoglu away from the San Antonio Spurs, of all teams.

All that has led to a very balanced team that is an absolute nightmare to match up against. It took years worth of great work to do it, not just one year or one move. While Warkentien has the award and Ferry got the Sporting News' version, neither one has their team in the NBA Finals. Otis Smith does.

Now, on with this thing we're supposed to call the Cavs' "supporting cast," in order of salary:

  • Ben Wallace: $14.5 million this year, $14 million in 2009-10 in last year

Reports following Game 6 in Orlando from our guy Chris Broussard at ESPN.com indicated that Wallace may be leaning towards retirement, something that has definitely come out of left field for the Cavs. From Broussard's report:

"I'm going to sit down and talk with my family, weigh my options and come up with a decision," the 34-year-old Wallace said after Cleveland's 103-90 loss. "Nothing's definite, but there's a strong possibility that this was my last season."

Wallace has one year and $14 million left on his contract. He has not yet spoken with Cavaliers management about retirement or a buyout.

"I haven't talked to Ben at all about his future," said general manager Danny Ferry, who was surprised to hear about Wallace's comments.

Wallace represents the remains of what was the failed Larry Hughes experiment. Instead of paying Hughes all this money, the Cavs pay it to Wallace. At the time of the trade that brought Wallace to
Cleveland in February of 2008, it was believed that the money would be better spent on Wallace, who could contribute more as a defensive big man, than on Hughes, who became a selfish me-first player to whom team success meant nothing.

Now, Wallace went from starting power forward to the bench. Trimming his trademark afro in the middle of the season was symbolic in showing that Wallace is now half the player he used to be. There should be at least three big men in this rotation ahead of Wallace, but there aren't. After Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao, Wallace is next in line. He shouldn't be seeing more than 10 minutes of action in any game at this point.

Wallace's main purpose for 2009-10 should be to serve as a massive expiring contract in trade talks. However, Ferry showed that he couldn't move Szczerbiak's $13 million expiring this past offseason, so what should make anyone think that he can move Wallace's?

  • Wally Szczerbiak: $13 million this year, unrestricted free agent this summer

GTFO, Wally. And please do let the door hit you on your way out.

Szczerbiak was one of the biggest flops on the Cavs this year. Just three years ago during the 2005-06 season, Szczerbiak was close to a 20-points-per-game scorer with
Minnesota and Boston. Just two years ago, in 2006-07, he was a 15-point scorer for Boston. Now, just two years later, Szczerbiak is absolute garbage, 7.0 points in the regular season off the bench and 3.6 in the playoffs.

The Cavs' bench struggles have a lot to do with Szczerbiak, who would go scoreless on many nights despite getting at least 20 minutes of burn. He was supposed to at least provide an outside jumper. In the biggest game of the season, all he provided were airballs, below-average defense, and just three points on 20 percent shooting in 14 minutes.

Ferry should have gotten rid of this bum the minute he had the chance. There should be no chance in hell that Szczerbiak be brought back this offseason.

Ferry

  • Zydrunas Ilgauskas ($10.8 million this year, $11.5 million player option for 2010-11)

Easily the softest center in the NBA. Does anyone else have any idea how maddeningly frustrating it is to see a 7'3" center try to lay the ball in instead of dunk it aggressively with two hands? And how is a guy who's 7'3" not getting to more than eight rebounds per game in the playoffs?

If the Cavs want a shooter, they should look for a shooting guard. But there is not a single championship team out there over the last decade that had a center in excess of seven feet play on the perimeter and shoot jumpers all day. The Celtics, Spurs, Heat, Pistons, and Lakers of years past -- champions of the last decade -- had hardasses up front who loved to bang bodies, get dirty, and grab every rebound in sight.

In a perfect world, Z would start coming off the bench for the Cavs beginning with next year. He's not a starter anymore. On many nights, he can create matchup problems for opponents because of his unique skill set. But he's not the guy you want starting. Not anymore, at least. After last season, it's clear that this guy is on the decline.

And once he's a free agent in 2010 (oh, he's picking up that player option this summer, for sure), let him go and don't ever look back. Unless he wants to come back at the veteran's minimum for a little over a million a year, which he should.

  • Mo Williams ($8.3 million this year, signed through the 2011-12 season with a $8.5 million player option for 2012-13

Here's where it gets interesting.

Mo Williams should not be a second scoring option for a championship team. He is, however, the perfect third option for a team looking to win titles. On this team, it should be LeBron as the first option, then a good post scorer as the second option, then Mo on the perimeter as the third option. Not LeBron first and then Mo for three after that.

Against the rest of the league not named
Orlando or Los Angeles, having Mo as the second option works. Other teams have no answer for LeBron other than double- or triple-teaming him. When that happens, Mo is there to shoot all day.

Against a good and athletic defensive team like
Orlando, Mo couldn't counter Orlando's 3-point assault. When the other team is draining 3's, it's up to Mo to counter that attack with his own. He didn't shoot 43.6 percent from downtown during the regular season for nothing.

The question here now is, what to do with Mo Williams? If the Cavs want to add a legitimate superstar next to LeBron (which Mo is NOT), they'll have to make anyone and everyone on this roster not wearing No. 23 available. That includes Williams, who enjoyed the best year of his career. Teams would absolutely love to have him as a combo guard who can shoot and handle the ball.

Sure, he fit well with LeBron, but he's not the perfect fit, and there are better options out there. If and when guys like Chris Bosh and Amar'e Stoudemire become available this summer, it's hard to imagine why these teams would want to deal their best players to the Cavs when Ferry isn't even willing to deal his second-best player.

When LeBron averages close to 40 points in the series and his team still loses in six games, the finger points directly at his "sidekick." Going into Saturday's Game 6, Williams was shooting 35.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from downtown, and 84.0 percent from the stripe in this series. This is the same guy who shot 46.7 percent, 43.6 percent, and 91.2 percent, respectively, during the regular season.

All-Star sidekicks live for the big stage like this one. Just ask Scottie Pippen or Kobe Bryant circa 2000. Or Tony Parker, the '07 Finals MVP. Or Paul Pierce, the '08 Finals MVP. Mo Williams is not of that caliber. And unless the Cavs get a sidekick of that caliber, they're not hanging banners from The Q any time soon.

  • Anderson Varejao: $5.7 million this season, $6.2 million player option for 2009-10

Here's the same guy who single-handedly set the Cavaliers back in 2007 with his silly and unprecedented holdout in restricted free agency. Now, after two years of putting up career numbers -- which would be nothing more than about eight points and seven boards a game, mind you -- and inspiring league-wide fines for flopping, Varejao is an unrestricted free agent. And as if $5.7 million isn't enough for a guy who should be a career backup and energy guy instead of a starting power forward, Varejao's head has probably swollen to match the size of his native country of Brazil in size.

This guy isn't going to opt out of a contract that pays him $6.2 million for next season just to get a couple hundred thousand more. He'll want at least $8 million. Varejao has become staple with this organization for five years now, and his Sideshow Bob appearance has become a trademark for the fans and the Cavs. But truth be told, his contract right now is perfect for him. He does do a lot of good things, and he helps this team win games.

However, for a championship team, he's better off helping a team win games off the bench. He's worth no more than $6 million a year. In fact, if I'm Varejao's agent, I'd tell him to pick up that option in these tough economic times. Teams aren't going to pony up big money to sign Anderson Varejao. The Cavs have already shown him that they're not going to give in to his contract demands.

Plus, with a ton of teams clearing cap room for 2010, Varejao might get overpaid by some GM who can't land anybody but feels the pressure to make a move. Remember, that's how a parade of big men in this league get the outrageous contracts that they do. By '10, the economic climate might be a little better than it is now, as well. But he's not getting paid this summer. Nobody's lining up to get a chance to sign him at $8 million a year any time soon.

And if they are, then fine: They can have him. Especially when easy stopgaps like Antonio McDyess and Rasheed Wallace are available.

  • Sasha Pavlovic: $4.5 million this season, $4.9 million (only $1.5 million guaranteed) for 2009-10

The time has come to pull the plug on this ridiculous experiment. Pavlovic was a key starter in the '07 Finals run, and he seemed like he was finally coming around to realize his potential of being a core player that can score and hit the 3.
07

Then, this P.O.S. followed Varejao's lead and had his own little holdout that same summer. Not that he had actually done that much to warrant holding out (but then again, neither did Varejao), but unlike Varejao, Pavlovic never looked the same after that. Instead of being a starter like he was in '07, he couldn't even crack the rotation off the bench.

Fortunately for the Cavs, that $4.9 million for next year can still be used in a trade, with the receiving team having the option of shaving $3.5 million off that salary and giving him nothing more than the $1.5 million that he's guaranteed. Being called upon to come off the bench and help out defensively in this
Orlando series was the last chance for Pavlovic, and he fell flat on his face. There is no way in hell that Pavlovic should be back next year with the Cavs.

And Ferry can and better find a replacement for him in the draft. A good one. And don't give up on him too early (hello, Shannon Brown).

Shannon Brown)

  • Delonte West: $3.8 million this year, $4.2 million next year, $4.6 million in 2010-11

West:

Delonte is the only guy on this roster outside of LeBron that I would want to keep as a Cavalier. He's the only guy that's really worth anything. He's tough as nails. He'll do whatever it takes to contribute to the game. If his shot isn't falling (which, unfortunately for him, it wasn't during this series), he'll try to be a pest on defense. Or he'll try to post up on the low block. Or he'll try to set screens. Or he'll try to facilitate ball movement.
West

Whatever you want him to do, Delonte West will do it for you. It's a shame that fools like Pavlovic and Szczerbiak made more money this season than this guy. Delonte West is the only member of the Cavaliers outside of LeBron James that I actually respected more after this
Orlando series. Seriously, if the Cavs do decide to trade Mo while his value is high, West can easily slide into the point guard spot.

I love this guy. And if you're a Cavs fan, you should, too. Definitely a keeper. And he's definitely the only one.

  • Daniel Gibson: $3.7 million this year, signed through 2012-13 at $4.7 million in final year

Exactly two years ago, this guy was a Cleveland heartthrob. Now, he's just a role player who can't play his role.

Gibson's playoff numbers went down significantly this postseason compared to the playoffs from each of the last two seasons. However, he had a decent contract at a decent price, and like Pavlovic's contract, the Cavs' control that last year (2012-13). Gibson's a nice shooter to have off the bench, and that's all that he will be for this team going forward.

He could also be a valuable throw-in if a deal for a star player comes along. But in the meantime, all teams could use a shooter off the bench like Gibson. When he gets hot, watch out. But Boobie's as streaky as you can get.

  • J.J. Hickson: $1.3 million this year and $1.4 million for 2009-10

It's still much too early to see what this guy can contribute, but his selection was more about addressing the age of the frontcourt. Nevertheless, Hickson should and must be thrown into any and all deals involving a superstar to sweeten the pot. Teams are always looking for young potential to go with incoming talent, and Hickson is only 20-years old.

  • Joe Smith: $1.2 million this year, unrestricted free agent this summer

This guy just fell out of the rotation completely during this Orlando series. His addition was just to have a veteran big man for the stretch run. Nothing more. His days in Cleveland are done.

  • Tarence Kinsey: $797,000 for this year, unrestricted free agent this summer

Buh-bye.

  • Darnell Jackson: $450,000 this year, $736,000 for 2009-10, and $854,000 for 2010-11

Between Jackson and Hickson, it's Jackson who can contribute faster. His ceiling certainly isn't as high as Hickson's, but he can evolve into a solid defensive big man off the bench. If Jackson begins to start knocking down that midrange jumper that opponents were giving him in the rare occasions when he was on the floor, then say hello to your long-term replacement for Joe Smith and Ben Wallace.

Jackson:
